Here at New Age Fitness, we don't believe in fad diets or "quick fixes." Instead, we believe in becoming more in touch with your body in order to learn for yourself the ideal eating regime for YOUR body, at this particular time in your life.

So, why the Whole30?

Because it's NOT a diet!....and it's important that you don't view it that way!

The SPIRIT of the Whole30 is an important element that a lot of people seem to miss the mark on. This plan is not about depriving yourself and forcing weight off and it's very important that you don't view it that way.

The foods that are eliminated are foods that tend to be problematic in a lot of people. So we eliminate these "questionable" foods and make more room for nourishing, whole foods that are fairly universally healthy for us all. In addition to actual negative health effects as a result to some of these foods, many of these eliminated foods are often responsible for creating "false cravings" in many of us so eliminating them allows us to become more in touch with what we actually need to nourish and balance our bodies.

Another part of the spirit of the Whole30 challenge is not to weigh yourself frequently. This is because we are NOT focusing on weight loss. While this is quite frequently a side effect of the challenge, we must not view it as the ultimate goal or, once again, we miss the SPIRIT of the Whole30 and threaten to create unhealthy relationships with food instead.

This challenge is not about punishing or depriving ourselves. We aren't focusing on how much weight we've lost or finding new and creative ways to recreate our comfort foods while on the program. Instead, we are stripping our nutrition down to the bare bones and bringing our bodies and minds more into balance by hitting the reset button on our eating habits.

So let's get started!

Getting Started

1. Learn About the Program. While you can do this challenge without reading the book, you may find it helpful to fully understand the program and the science behind it before making such a big commitment for 30 days. If that sounds like you, make sure you read the Whole30 book. Click here to order it from Amazon. It's also available in audio form.

But you MUST learn the rules before you start!! If you're not going to read the book, here is a PDF from the Whole30 website with the bare minimum of information you will need to start the program. It is important that you at least read this PDF in its entirety before beginning the program.

You also should read this article of updated compliant foods list! They make so much sense. For instance, this list now excludes plantains which I excluded after subsisting on the first round of Whole30.

All other information I am providing is optional. However, the more you read and research this program as you prepare to begin, the more success you are likely to have!

2. Commit to the Program and Join our Group! Make sure you join our Whole30 Facebook group.  This group will allow you to connect with other local people doing the challenge! When you get in the group, create a post stating the day you will start.

Sign up for our Newsletter! By subscribing to our newsletter, you'll automatically be notified of all events hosted by New Age Fitness, including Whole30 related events.

3. PREPARE!! This step is HUGE! Find recipes and shop! This could very much make the difference between success and mid-program exhausted defeat. Here is a great resource page from Whole30 with plenty of links to lists and guides to help you through your Whole30 journey.

4.  Weigh, measure, photograph....and then don't do it again!

An important part of this program is to truly focus on the nutritional and mental health part. If you are constantly monitoring your weight and measurements, you are missing the point!

5. Create your plan. This may seem like it falls under "prepare," but this is different. Really take a step back and make sure you have a plan in place that ensures your success. For example, you probably don't want to pick a month where you're going to be traveling for a week of it or attending lots of holiday related events. Instead, pick a fairly peaceful month where, in addition to this eating plan, you can block off time to do other things that nurture you such as taking up yoga (I happen to know a place) or do this plan in conjunction with healing Ayurvedic practices such as Panchakarma.

Whatever your plan looks like, make sure it is self-nurturing and in the spirit of healing yourself.

If the thought of embarking on this program seems completely overwhelming, and you'll be giving up lots of your favorite processed foods, then you have all the steps you need. Just follow the eating guidelines that Whole30 provides and you will inevitably be much healthier (mind and body) when this program concludes.

However, if you already eat pretty clean and/or have done this program before and are hoping to take it to the next level, here are some additional elements to consider adding to your program:

  • Focus on the best quality foods you can consume. In addition to the obvious things like organic produce, consider limiting your meat consumption to "lighter" meats and proteins such as fish, scallops and eggs While a big serving of Egg Roll in a Bowl is completely Whole30 compliant (and unbelievably delicious!), it may not be the most nourishing and healing meal you could eat. Instead, you can opt for gently cooked vegetables with lots of fresh herbs and a small portion of meat. Another example would be your beverage choices. La Croix is  technically a Whole30 compliant drink. However, the jury is still out on just what "natural flavors" exactly means as well as what carbonated beverages can do to your digestive system and bones. Instead, you could opt for an ayurvedic detox tea.
  • Get organized! What better way to detox yourself than to add your environment to it. While you're hiding out from parties and restaurants for the month, why don't you go ahead and get all those organizational projects you've been putting off done and emerge from this month with a new body AND life!
  • Intermittent Fasting. A perfect addition to a clean eating regimen could be a gut healing and body boosting IF plan. Just like the Whole30, IF may not be for everyone but learn about it and see if it's possibly a good addition to your eating plan.
  • Meditate! Have you been promising to start a meditation program? Why not commit yourself to meditate every morning for all 30 days?
Bottom line, if you're going to dedicate yourself to this month, really go all in! Decide that you will emerge from this month so completely changed that you may hardly recognize yourself!
